In our Tokyo Experiences series, athletes share what it felt like to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games. After tasting the highs of playing wheelchair tennis at the highest level, Martyn Dunn is committed to qualifying for Paris 2024.

Having earned the privilege of putting on the green and gold for the first time at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics games to play wheelchair tennis would have to be my greatest achievement so far in my life. On the 25th of November 2015, I had a motorbike accident which left me a T12 paraplegic. At that point in my life I didn’t know what do to or where my life would go. Finding wheelchair tennis, it gave me a reason to get out of bed every morning and gave me purpose. The fact that the games were able to go ahead with the current climate of world issues was incredible. The feel at the Athletes Village and tennis courts, you really felt the vibe and that you were at the pinnacle of all disabled sports. There were some great highs of watching people win gold, some lows and everything in-between. The plan is now to give myself every chance to make Paris in 2024. After being in the Paralympic scene, it’s motivated me to be a better player and to see how far I go in the wheelchair Tennis world.
