Meet: Drew
How long have you been doing Support Work?
I’ve been a DSW with AQA for about 8 years now. I still support my very first client today.
What attracted you to the role?
I got tired of charities aggressively hitting me up for cash. I decided that if I didn’t have money to give away, maybe I could give my time. That was when I became a DSW.
What do you enjoy about Support Work?
It’s remarkably uplifting to witness that, even after injury, life goes on and it’s great. I never cease to be amazed by my clients.
Have you learnt something about yourself that you didn’t know before becoming a SW?
I’ve learnt that I’m not squeamish, thankfully. Bodily functions and nudity are a part of everyday life, whether they be your own or someone else’s.
Are there things you find challenging about the role?
The role is unavoidably invasive, unfortunately. It’s important to always be patient and happy to perform your role. Particularly with regard to client’s families, it’s important not to pry or judge.
What kind of support are you providing to clients at the moment?
I’m providing a lot of community access at present. It’s eye-opening to realise how much clients have to plan ahead before going out. Disability access is sometimes inadequate, and there are rarely enough disabled bathrooms.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I’m an aspiring author, so most of my spare time is spent writing, which is a little antisocial but very rewarding.
Do you have any pets?
I have a Boston terrier named Gomez. Before my wife had our daughter, he was our baby. Fortunately, Cassie is old enough for him to play with now, so he’s a little less jealous.
What’s something most people would be surprised to know about you?
Most people are amazed and slightly horrified at my vast collection of rare and obscure sci fi and horror films.
